"My Hope of Heaven Lies..."

Aha! Order of business number 58367.

Hornblower (or others concerned with sailory slashy goodness) people on my flist: Need advice (on another's behalf) regarding sodomy in 1860 or so. Would a newcomer to a ship be informed of pertinent article, or would they be expected to know ahead of time, or was it generally not mentioned outright, or how does that work, anyway?

Sankyou.

Sailory slashy goodness, yay. I don't know about 1860, but in Hornblower's time period the Articles had to be read at least once a month to the crew.

I would assume that in 1860, the Articles of War would still be read often, so it would be something they knew.

If they had friends/family, etc already in the Navy, they might have already heard about the business of sodomy.
