I wrote you a thank-you card.

(--something like that, perhaps, and she never really learnt properly to find anything in herself to like, so it's easier to be bitter and disagreeable and keep secrets--)

He has a merciless conversation with himself in which he states quite plainly that he's not going to follow the stupid girl around, he does not care for her at all, this ridiculous behaviour reminds him of Rosencrantz, and he's not going to put up with this from himself.

It's a complete accident, in fact, that he nearly knocks into her coming out of a shop.

"Are you ever going to leave me alone?" she demands, and he feels a bit of relief somewhere she can't see. When there are questions, everything is right.

"Why not?" he says, in a tone which is, for him, almost cheerful.
