At first, Fantine is afraid of the woman with whom she leaves her daughter. The face is like a painting from a gallery of horrors. But they speak for a while, and Mme Thenardier soothes her, until Fantine realises that a face means nothing, that the woman has a gentle soul, and--when she is kissed, she tells herself that it only means Mme Thenardier will hold her daughter more dear.
