Meg likes watching the audience when she dances, just in case somebody's watching her back, and their eyes can meet and he can fall madly in love with her and turn out to be wildly rich and carry her away to live with him for-ever. So she's more surprised than she knows how to think of, when the somebody whose eyes she meets is a girl with a violet tucked behind her ear, and Meg realises she wants to be carried away anyway.
