"Still You Said For-Ever..."
You know where I love driving the best? The back road from Newport to 11-15, where the trees are close by the road and grow together overhead, so there's sort of a green and sunlight tunnel the whole way to the highway. It's the most beautiful place I've ever seen.
To-day when we got back from the Oriental house I picked peas. I don't think there's anything in the world as wonderful as garden peas. They're fat and full of promise and they sit there half-hidden and you find them, and they're good in the hand, and when you've picked the garden your basket is so full. And they're wonderful to shell, too, because you split the thick fat pods and then there are all these teeny peas scattering and you gather them up, and it takes hundreds of pods to make a basketful of peas, but they're like marbles or jewels when you let them go through your fingers.
I think peas are my proof of God. If something perfect exists-- I think there must have been a God, to create peas. They're just too wonderful for chance. That and rainbows, maybe.
While I was picking them the Polish rooster was fussing around in front of me. He's very lovely.
To-day I made brownies for my library ladies and I'm bring Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead for Marian, because she said she wanted to read it. I was thinking, somebody ought to write Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Just Restin'. Maybe. Also I went to Michael's with my gift card and bought the most beautiful things, sparklies and shinies and pretties, and sprinkles shaped like hearts and lovely new notecards, and teeny dinosaurs for Zara, and I sat on the floor and read through their Pirates of the Caribbean and Spiderman colouring books, because they were hilarious. Especially the PotC ones, because they were funny artists' interpretations of the characters, and everybody looked silly. And they made Norrington look ebil.
And then I sat on the steps outside and ate my taffy, I got rainbow taffy, and realised that she hadn't charged me for the pretty paper I bought, so I went back in and paid for it and found silk flowers on the floor and kept them. And then I read outside until Mum came.
We had our peas for dinner and black raspberries for dessert.
