"Couldn't Ask for a Better Day..."

I'm running MARC records at the library, and I just noticed that the summary for the film "Precious" includes the line "Precious Jones, an inner-city high school girl, is illiterate, overweight, and pregnant... again".

Can I just take a moment to be extremely offended that 'overweight' is apparently as much a problem as being illiterate or pregnant due to sexual abuse? Based on the cover, what they actually mean is 'obese', but I would argue that it is still not an issue on the magnitude of the other two.

Ffff people annoy me. Back to work.

EDIT: oh my GOD i HATE romantic comedies. BE more misogynistic, i DARE YOU. OR HOW ABOUT NOT. *fumes*

Possibly it's meant to be taken as a condition that's equally stigmatized as illiteracy or teen pregnancy? I haven't seen the movie, so I don't know how they actually deal with it...

the "... again." Makes it sound like it's a comedy which, from what I understand, it isn't. Maybe I missed the part about sexual abuse being funny, though, in the descriptions my parents gave as "really good and messed up."

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I can't help but think that the illiteracy and the being pregnant by one's father are the more pressing problems.

Ugh. I feel for you -- I had to watch the new Iron Man movie today. Halfway through, I started praying I would have to throw up so I could walk out without having to explain myself to my husband and brother.

I haven't seen it either, but from what I hear, "Precious" is supposed to be an Enriching Film of some kind or another. Phrasing could be better, yes.

Also I cannot stand (most) romantic comedies either. Pleh.
