I've just got back from the races. It was glorious, and God knows how much money I lost.

All right. In actuality, da' had to place all my bets for me. The first time, I strode with dignity to the betting place-thingy, and said, in a self-possessed, dignified voice,

"I've never done this before..."

To which the man behind the counter raised an eyebrow and asked in a highly condescending tone, "How old are you, dear?"

"Thirteen."

"You must be eighteen or older to place a bet."

And then he sent me away, and I sulked. Such a mature Soujin is she.

But now I have seven balloons. There were balloons everywhere, and I haven't had a balloon in a matter of years, so I asked our server if I could have one, and she gave me lots. And there was one stuck in a vent, and Susan threw her shoes at it to try and get it down, and the server stood on a chair and threw shoes at it to try and get it down, and then two tall people came from the crowd and finally got it down for me. We drew such a lovely crowd.

And it was a gorgeous red balloon. I am happy.

Our pastor was with us, and he kept winning every race he bet on. I told him he couldn't in good conscience keep it, and that he must put it in the collection plate. He said that would only hold true if he was a Methodist, but he was an Episcopalian, and he was keeping his money.

Da' did win 1.60 on the seventh race with the eighth horse. It had an awful name.
