When she gives him orders, he watches her face--sometimes her eyes, sometimes her lips, sometimes her nose. Every part of her face moves at some time or another, and he catches every movement. He wants to learn her so well that he'll never mistake her meaning. One tired morning, when she speaks, she is abrupt and quick. He would be crestfallen, except that he has succeeded--from her face, he can see that she is not displeased with him. He is so happy that he almost smiles; but he doesn't. It wouldn't be decorous.
