Am having absolutely no luck retrieving my AIM account. Could someone please help me? It says my account has been suspended, which I am going to attribute to having finally stopped getting AOL, but now I can't figure out how to delete my old account for the purpose of making a new one with the same screenname.

Unfortunately, you can't delete AIM screennames... which is stupid IMO, but anyway... yeah.
