In other news, there is a RENT rpg opening on GreatestJournal. Those of you who have time, go ye and join. It's here, and needs members.
Stoneybridge suitably mad. We put up the Christmas tree and I, typically, smashed an ornament by mistake. >_> However, I went and visited Charlie and we talked about Harry and what a nice fellow he was and Charlie was absolutely so sweet that I hugged him, and he glowered at me. *g* Then I went to see Gladys, and even got in a visit with Anna towards the end of the day. Alberta did not get angry with me; Janet shouted, but Janet always shouts (she upset Gladys); and Maria was told me I was an idiot, but I, in a totally unexpected burst of something resembling courage, told her that I was very sorry, but she had to be quiet and stop disrupting the group or she would have to leave. Unfortunately, she opted for leaving.
Anna is up, seeming mainly recovered from her stroke. Alberta is up, because she had a good time to-day. Charlie is, understandably, down, but I think he'll be better later on. It's okay. Marcie was good, as always; Grandma Jennie was up up up because she got a visit and seems to be feeling a lot better now. Verna is up because she doesn't need her wheelchair any more. Malcolm is down; his wheelchair fell apart and I couldn't fix it and nurses wouldn't listen to me, which of course made me panic like mad. Mary is down.
Ah, the nursing home NASDAQ. >_> Criminally fun, terminally ill, and scary as hell. I didn't just say that.
Notre-Dame de Paris is still a wonderful book. But SPOILERS I can't believe he killed Jehan. Wah. Jehan was stupid and cute. END SPOILERS

Date: 2004-12-06 07:18 pm (UTC)Is it just me, or is the pronunciation difference between "Jean" and "Jehan" ridiculously small and pointless?

Date: 2004-12-07 01:54 am (UTC)The difference between "Jean" and "Jehan" may actually be a tiny bit bigger than it may look.
"Jean" is pronounced 'normally', it has only one syllable in it (as a Finn, it's very hard for me to explain it so that also English speakers understand it) but it's the normal French word.
Whereas "Jehan" has two syllables: Je-an (the 'h' is presumably silent and the 'an' is a nasal sound).
At least that was what my two French teachers said when I posed the question to them some years ago. I can't be sure, though, how they would have pronounced those names in the 19th century, much less in the 15th century...
See, I told you I'm a weird geek.

Date: 2004-12-08 12:00 pm (UTC)But at least he tells us the character's full name whenever his first name is Jean (Jean Valjean, Jean Prouvaire) so we can assume that no other character was named Jean. Had he named, for example Enjolras, or Combeferre Jean, I'm sure he would have told it as well. Right? :-p

Date: 2004-12-08 06:45 pm (UTC)The trouble with NDdP is that everyone has the same first name and about three surnames, so one can't tell if it's one person or three, and therefore gets them mixed up nigh well constantly.

Damn, I just compared Prouvaire to the sparkly bitch of the north. I'm sorry, Jehan.

Unfortunately, Jehan is a brat by the time he dies. He deserves to be smacked. However, he doesn't deserve to be swung around in circles and then hurled into a wall of the Notre-Dame. >_>
