I have now seen Notre-Dame de Paris, the musical. It is without a doubt one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen in my entire life. I am madly, desperately in love with the whole thing.

I shall probably shortly expire of my love, being as it is likely to be unrequited; and as you all know, being as I am poet, my heart cannot long withstand that anguish of unrequited love. So I shall die. You can put it on my headstone:

She saw Notre-Dame de Paris and promptly expired of love.

It doesn't have a very good ring to it, does it?

Nevertheless. It was beautiful. I cannot even choose a single favourite moment, because every time I try I start out with, "Oh, I loved Dechire, but Le Temps des cathredrales was so beautiful, and I'm still singing Les Sans-papiers--Oooh, and Florence was the bestest song ever, and Condamnes, and Lune, and--and--" &c.

As you can see, my tastes seem to run towards Gringoire and Clopin, but I'm not exactly surprised by this.

At any rate, the entire family will be forced to see it. Mum has been enticed by hearing that Phoebus truly is as bastardly a bastard as he is the book (though I think even moreso, perhaps); she hated the Disney movie because of his good-guyliness. Da' has been enticed with promises of absolutely stunning choreography. Waen, alas, is not in the least enticed, and has been decorating the Quasimodo tree and pretending not to hear me. I shall have to serenade her.

Oooh, and [livejournal.com profile] erinpuff, I loved Gringoire's makeup. ^____^ I am such a silly silly, but it looked nice, I thought. Actually, I loved everyone's makeup, I confess it here. I loved everyone.

I do think, though, that it's like the third Harry Potter movie (feel free to impale and mangle me now for making an allusion to The Great Evil That is HP): if one doesn't know the backstory, one is going to be rather lost. They do a decent job of making up for what they take out, though.

NO DJALI! *wails and dies*

But that's all one. It's beautiful. It's fantastically, indescribably beautiful, and I am passionately in love. I shall give it my heart. I shall tear myself to pieces for its sake. I shall spend my entire life struggling vainly to get cast in it, even as an extra, despite the fact that it would be easier to be Esmeralda than an extra when one considers all the jumping about the extras do. In the meantime, I will dance to it, and sing it. If possible, I shall buy myself a soundtrack. In the meantime-- In the meantime--

I need icons. Like whoa.

Hey, it's more original than consumption. ^_~

I'm so glad you liked!

Hee, I made my mom and my brother watch it. ^^ They liked it, unless they were lying. ^_~

I'll confess, I didn't read the book until a while after I watched the musical. Actually, first I downloaded most of the music and fell madly in love with Bruno Pelletier; then I bought the DVD and squeed forever; then finally I read the book. I am horrid. :( (I didn't read the Tome until two years ago, either, and I've been a fan of the musical for eight and a half. Also, I read the LotR trilogy after seeing the first movie. Sigh.) Anyway, it probably makes much more sense done your way. :)

True, although the two are very, very closely related.

Oh, I so did! ^___________^

Aha! Well, that's ammunition I shall add to my desperate battle for success.

Really? Aheheh. ^_^ Well, I read the Tome about three or seven months after seeing the musical, and I've never read the LotR trilogy, preferring to stay quite out of all of it. I'm not necessarily sure my way makes all that much sense.

At any rate, I am now dying for a soundtrack, if there is one. On the plus side, it'll make it the first year I haven't stared blankly and asked, "Eh, what?" when someone asks what I'd like for my birthday.

There is. There are many. There's the regular French one, and there's the live French one that's got everything on it, and there's the English one which is crap (because the translation is really bad), and also Spanish and Italian and Russian and there's the piano version and the symphonic version (which is impossible to find, but I have!)

Sigh. The regular French one has only about half the songs, and a lot of my favourites aren't there. I assume the live French one is omg expensive...

Yes, it's like $40. Sigh.

(I don't have any legal recordings. *cringes*)

Demmit. I'll have to sacrifice my trampoline. *g* *gets one Big Present for birthday and then little ones only after that* Oh, well, small price to pay. I'll just keep quiet about it until a bit before my birthday, and then renounce all wishes for any other gift except for it. 'Tis how I got JRC LM.

I adore Notre-Dame de Paris too! That musical is no doubt one of the very best ones I've ever heard (and seen, but only on DVD). And I can't bear it that I actually was in Paris when it was played in Palais des Congrès but since I only then bought the CD I had no idea that it was something worth seeing. *sigh*

Well, anyway. The complete live French version CD is of course the one everyone should have but the regular shorter French version has some of the songs slightly differently performed. Annoying really. Nothing huge, but for example, Le Cour des miracles is a bit different, and it has, I think, a different singer as Ésmeralda.

But it's always a joy to hear people loving this musical!!

Yay! There're more of us! Mum has excited me with the suggestion that it might be playing in Paris when we visit, and we could see it. Of course now I'm just holding my breath until we go, and it probably won't be showing, but... you know. Woe that you were so close!

I am not prepared to be fond of the shorter; I shall definitely wait it out for the longer. Also, I love Esmeralda greatly, and would not hear anyone else play here.

Love it? *g* I just rethemed my bloody LJ. I can't believe this...

Ohhhh, jealous. I bought the CD years ago on the assumption that no obscure French language musical could be that bad (which is a risky bit of reasoning, but it worked in this case) and have adored the show ever since. But I've never seen it, hence the jealousy.

Incidentally, I've heard some horrific things about the English language version.

Ah! I want the CD badly! *jealouses right back* But it is, indeed, beautiful performed.

Never heard it; think this is probably a good thing. Les Miserables didn't suffer particularly badly on translation, but I'm not sure if it's a rare case or not.

The English translation is uninspired at best, downright ridiculous at worst. I do not recommend. :o
