Guess who's getting (much) better? ^___^
Mum helped me buy a birthday card for Rebecca. Now I've just got to find her a gift. I want it to be something perfect.
To-morrow begins tech week for my play. Gah.
*is secretly very happy. will have pancakes of Wednesday morning, for the first time in over a year*
And I have my Buddy Holly CD back, and my Notre-Dame de Paris, thank God! And fresh broccoli!
And The Aunt Who Hates Me said it's perfectly fine that my new birthday is with them, and she'll be happy to make my cake, and it's going to be very nice.
Also,
king_connie makes me deliriously happy.

Date: 2005-05-17 02:15 am (UTC)Oh, GOD yeah. And Justin. Oh, swoon. AND Florian. And Zara the scratchcat. And, oh lordy, I love the Westmarkians.
I was going to ask, cos I had to return Beggar Queen to the libary, for details about Justin's death, cos I can't remember very well how it happened... I have The Kestrel sitting beside me - I renewed it so I could keep the map. But not BQ. :P So now I can't get the scene I want.

Date: 2005-05-17 02:40 am (UTC)*seeks copy* Just a moment. Let's see if I can find it.
Ahem.
The defenders of the barricade streamed over the breastwork, racing to the aid of the partisians, who had begun to waver under the assault. Justin had remounted, but his horse had been shot from under him. Theo caught sight of him in the press of the counterattack. Justin had drawn his sabre, slashing wildly at soldiers, giving ground under the onslaught of their bayonets. The cannoneers fired again, the ball tore a path through the crowd pouring from the barricade. Theo glimpsed Red Cockade, still on her feet. The people of the barricade swarmed around the gun, clubbing musket butts against the gunners.
Through the smoke, Theo saw Justin free of his attackers. Sabre shattered, he threw it aside, and cast about for another weapon. Justin stumbled, sprawled on the cobbles. He heaved himself up to one knee, turned, and sighted Theo, the violet eyes burning with rage. He was bleeding heavily, the pale yellow hair matter, streaked with red.
Theo's head reeled. The street lurched before his eyes. For that instant, he was in the square at Nierkeeping with Justin screaming at him. This time he did not hesitate. His body seemed no longer his own. His hands--did they belong to him or another?--had already set the match to the object they carried. The makeshift fuse was alight. He flung the bottle and its flaming rags at the feet of Justin's assailants.
The flash blinded him. He was not aware of the explosion. The soldiers tumbled back. He ran to Justin and seized him under the arms. Sun were still bursting in Theo's eyes and he tried to lift Justin to his feet.
Someone had run up beside him. Theo turned and stared dumbly. It was Mickle.
"Get him away," Mickle cried. "Into the alley. Hurry. Zeller has reinforcements."
Justin looked at them like a puzzled child. His jacket front, Theo realised, was sopping wet, soaked through with blood. Mickle was furiously ordering Theo to move. Between them, they dragged Justin to the alley. He had not taken his eyes off Theo and still stared at him even as Mickle propped him against the side of the building.
"Not you. Not Florian," Justin whispered. "I'd have given them a republic."
"They'll have one." Theo knelt beside him. "Believe that."
"Yes." He gave Theo his familiar, boyish grin. "I'm right, you know."
"Stay quiet, Justin. There's no time for any of that." Mickle had torn open his shirt and was trying to staunch the blood. She turned to Theo. "Can we take him to Ingo?"
"Let him be." Theo stood up. "He's dead. We saved his life once. I would have done it again. It doesn't matter now."

Date: 2005-05-17 03:26 am (UTC)...of course, now Rina's upset, but hey, she's emotionally twitchy, anyway.

Date: 2005-05-17 03:35 am (UTC)Um, well. We read through everybody's death scenes trying to find it, so Zara's pretty upset, too.

Date: 2005-05-17 03:44 am (UTC)The Kestrel is sitting next to me, open to Rina's death, with Stock's and Luther's bookmarked. For reference (not that I actually need to refer to Luther's death, but I didn't want to leave him out, just because he's not lucky, or unlucky, enough to have a DF typist).
That's one of the things that I really love about this trilogy, though, is that Lloyd Alexander isn't afraid to kill beloved characters. It annoys me when I read a book where I know the author won't kill a majour character, cos then I don't care about the action scenes.
...I could handle him killing fewer of my favourite characters, though...

Date: 2005-05-17 03:52 am (UTC)Ohhh. I've been trying to put those out of my head, gah. I've managed conveniently to forget about Luther's, because I loved him so much.
Well, I know, but.
Exactly.

Date: 2005-05-17 04:11 am (UTC)Sorry! eep. Luther deserves a typist. He keeps getting left out of things. And he definitely deserves to hang out with all the ghosts.
...ex-act-ly. I mean, really, Zara's death was unnecessary to the plot, frankly. Growr.

Date: 2005-05-17 04:18 am (UTC)He does, though! Zara would be happy... Unfortunately, mine aren't good with sharing with others from their own books, I've found. >_> Demnit.
Well, not entirely, but. *wibbles* It was so angled and hurting and Zara-ish, too. Soujin so unhappy.

Date: 2005-05-17 04:26 am (UTC)Yeah, I know what you mean - I almost wish I hadn't done both Rina and Stock, but I can't imagine not having one of them. If someone else wonderful had taken Stock, I would have rejoiced in it, but now that he's living in my brain, I wouldn't give him to someone else for the world. It just means that all the huggy-siblingness between them goes on in my red notebook or my head, and not in lj comment wars.
At least Lloyd Alexander does a damn good death. J.K. Rowling's death scenes suck. :P CEDRIC. growr. But the Westmarky deaths are marvellously written. Cos if there's one thing worse than your favorite character suddenly dying, it's having them suddenly die IN A BADLY WRITTEN SCENE.
...which I think is my way of reassurring my dead puppets.

Date: 2005-05-17 04:43 am (UTC)*nodnods* Exactly, and that's why I don't even want to get into it. I'd never put the second one down, but he'd be at it with Zara constantly and nobody would know. It's just that that's making me shy off.
TRUE. Very, very true. That was why I always liked Redwall so much when I was teensy. Redundant as hell, but wicked awesome deaths.
Aww.
By the way, up in the bit I typed up for you? Red Cockade should be a his, not a her. O_o Oops. Genderswitch.

Date: 2005-05-17 05:00 am (UTC)Ooh, Redwal. hee. My first screen name ever was LutraPearl. *nostalgia* Ahhh, fond memories, whee. And yes, major props to Brian Jacques for his death scenes.
Isn't Red Cockade dead and his wife took his name at that point? So it -would- be her? Or am I wrong?

Nostalgia indeed. Now there was a man who wasn't afraid to off the important ones!
*facepalms* ....In other news, it's been far too long since I read those books.
