Very silly, very short La Carlotta/Cosette for Shelley...! Who graciously provided us, months ago, with Jim Croce in two volumes. <3 thank you, and we're sorry this took so long.

C Chord

The same girl sits in the front row at every performance of the opera. There's always an old man dressed in black beside her, and she always wears black, too. It's not very pretty, Carlotta notices, sniffing. Girls don't dress nicely any more for the Opera. Perhaps they do not even care any longer...! It would be quite typical.

Backstage the boy is not very quick or very clever at helping her change her dresses, and she hits him with her fan, cursing in Spanish. Stupid thing! She's furious by the time she's onstage again.

But the girl sitting in the front row has blue eyes, Carlotta notices.

After the performance, she comes out to the foyer. She doesn't usually, but they applauded so terribly to-night that she wishes to walk among them proudly, to show them how sad it is that they don't appreciate fine art. She has an escort, and they cut through the crowd like a bull's horn through a red cloak (Carmen and Escamillo).

She is just leaving when the girl from the front rushes along beside her, smiling and breathless and in a whirl of shyness. It's truly gratifying. The girl's face is awed and delighted, and her cheeks glow.

"Oh--Madame--Madame--oh, I do so love to hear you sing--!" she says, in a quick tumble of words. Carlotta smiles.

"You are a nice girl."

"Oh, I do mean it, Madame! I am so grateful to Papa always for taking me to come hear you. I cannot say how I love it." She is so earnest it's enchanting.

Carlotta takes her hand briefly, benevolently. The girl is quite speechless (Musetta and Mimi).

"I hope you will come again. It will be Faust, the next performance."

"Yes--! Oh! yes, I do know. Oh! I wish it were to-morrow."

"I shall give you tickets," Carlotta says imperiously. How charming the girl is! (what blue eyes!) "You will be my guests, if you are so fond of the Opera."

The girl blushes all over with pleasure, and can't thank Carlotta enough, over and over. Finally they part; both of them are happy. As her carriage drives off, Carlotta watches the girl through the back window, like a courtesan who fears she is leaving her lover for-ever (Violetta and Alfredo).

She believes she is quite taken with the little thing.

(what a pretty mouth she has!)

(Guiletta and Antonia)

Both of them wish Faust were to-morrow.
