The sharp woman comes into the bakery in a blast of winter wind, and Lise starts behind her counter. Over the dark blue dress, the woman is wearing a heavy cloak buttoned up from the hem, and her long, thin fingers fumble opening it.
With a short sigh, Lise frowns at her and goes to help, undoing button after button from the tiny cloth slits, until the woman emerges from it like an ugly newborn moth from a cocoon.

When he rubbed his chin, it was rough, and Gideon Spillett realised that he was tired of stubble. Luckily enough, he thought wryly, Cyrus could invent a razor out of two bits of shell and some clay.
Zara doesn't know anything about flowers. They don't mean anything to her, and she doesn't like them. She can't really imagine anybody liking them. Marius' grandfather has a friend he loves to take Marius to visit, a friend he talks about sometimes glowingly, sometimes grumpily. Marius is fifteen, and the stories about the war thrill him until he can't look at M. Darnay without feeling a flutter of excitement.
"Why are you afraid?" he asks gently, stroking her hair. He's never been brave enough to do that before, but she's trembling so terribly that he must do something. Sorelli presses her face against his shoulder, blushing and crying a little both at once.
"I fear he might choose to kill you," she whispers.
The young man brave and beautiful shouts that you can't change the past, but you can change history; Justin watches him, low, knowing that you can change the past you can change you can change if you only try.
She used to watch with horror when the rough men and dirty sailors pulled the other girls into alleys or behind houses; now it's routine, and she leads them herself sometimes.
She lost Weasel for a little while once after the barricade, after Keller died. He came back a week later, and she lectured him and pulled his ears for going off like that. He traded with kicking her legs; and Sparrow knows that however grownup her little brother pretends to be, he's still a baby.
