He can't hear what they're saying, so it is entirely unexpected when he is gathered up bodily, heaved onto the bed, and showered with kisses. "We're going to cure you," says one or the other, he can't tell which.
He tickled the goat's beard, ruffled its ears, murmured to it softly. Its mistress slept, guarded by the knife in her hand. Pierre assured himself he didn't care. He was much fonder of the goat, anyway. At least it had never tried to bite him. In fact, as it snuffled his cheek softly, he declared silently that if it came down to it, he'd much rather be married to Djali. Beauty is all very well, but a poet needs affection.
