psalm_onethirtyone: (And She'll Go Mad)

Something I wrote to-day for Waen: honing a theme. Or something.

Green Love Song

I am used to being laughed at
And I know that few people who read it will understand this song, because the way I love
Is considered fashionable instead of true,
Something for presidential candidates and extremists, and associated with fanatics, soy, carob, and wheat germ.
And it is looked at as a luxury.
I have been told it is a luxury to love, as if my car costs more than yours, and I can afford that. But
I can't. And I can. My car does not cost more than yours,
But I worry over bills and monthly payments. I scrape by the way you do, made no poorer by my love than you by yours.

I sort my plastics from glass, and ask to take yours home, which is when you laugh.
Because you take your love out to dinner, and buy it roses, but because I take mine to the recycling centre
And buy it fluorescent light bulbs--
I just want to know the difference. We both have romantic souls. We both want to please our loves and we want love in return.

But when I sing my songs someone rolls her eyes and says, 'Environmentalist,' which I am not. I am
A lover.
Someone says I anticipate the threat, like the stereotype of a father who knows the boy his daughter is dating is bad news
Before he ever meets him.
Someone says this as if the rising warmer waters are a first date that might go wrong, as if the two-Hummer family down the street
Is necking at a drive-in movie.

Look--your daughter is not the same as my lover. Your daughter has you, and you will protect her
And I will help you.
But someone is calling me a hippie liberal tree-hugger lefty
With every bottle of Ecover I buy.
Listen--I have a song, I'm singing a song for my love, I'll telling it everything, I'm planting it trees.
I have a song for my love, I say I can still see your stars, I can still drink your water; I say
I am closing that hole in your sky, I am letting the sun warm you but I won't let it burn you, I say; I say
I'm saving the whales, the wolves, and the redwood forests, the peeling remnants of your magic, and the water, I swear, will still roll from a duck's back without sinking in.

I say, I sing, I tell my love.
But I am telling it what you tell your love when you say 'I will never let anything hurt you'.
It is a wish, not the truth.
It's a wish because you are the only one, or one of a few, who will protect your love.
But I will protect your love.
With all my heart, I will rally the world, and when you say 'I will never let anything hurt you,'
It will be your truth.
It will be your truth to give your love.

I am writing this song because I never want my words dismissed as cute, because the last time I wrote a song, someone said 'cute'.
Protect my love.
Protect my love, and come to my wedding. Bring your love with you. I promise the cake will be as real as a polar ice cap, and as sweet as native flowers.
Let no one laugh, but come. Bring your love to my wedding, and let us protect each other.

We will wear cloths of green.
