Green Love Song, take 3.0 (THIS IS A HARD POEM TO WRITE).
When I die I think they will tuck me away,
fold the fatness of my sweet body
into a long cardboard box--
--I asked for cardboard--
because people are so afraid of the worms getting in
but my god with all this powerful thick
greatness of me
why shouldn't I feed the hungry? since it's no crime
to eat.
The long reaching roots of a newborn apple tree
will eat the good marrow of my bones
which faithfully supported me for so many years.
The kinked segmented length of earthworms
will eat the dusty whisper of the invisible skin cells
which held me together peacefully.
The shiny mother- of- pearl- maggots,
the iridescent beetles with their broad backs,
they will take what they need from me to strengthen themselves.
So why should anybody buy me a bright copper casket?
They couldn't make one big enough anyway.
It will be cardboard between me and the hungry dirt--
of which there is enough to encompass
anything.
Not that I am in a hurry to die--
when before I am eaten there is still so much
to taste.
When I die I think they will tuck me away,
fold the fatness of my sweet body
