Well. T'was my first day at work to-day.

It was alternately really nice and really terrifying. I know most people's names by now, and I can remember who's in which room somewhat.

A lot of the residents are quite lucid, but a fair number aren't, and I'm getting to know which are which. I know who I'm absolutely stark mad scared to death of, and who I get on really well with.

I changed calendars first thing, and then went around watering everyone's plants, which was pretty fun. A few people water their own plants, and one old lady attacked me and by the time I got out of her room I was shaking, and the lady at the nurses' centre looked at me like I was nuts for even taking this woman seriously. Meh. But a lot of them wanted to talk to me and tell me about themselves and I shook hands with several people who seemed to like that. Some of them recognise me from when I came in to get registered and take my building tour.

Then we had about two and a half hours of Bingo, which seems to be a popular sport around here. I helped--well, I don't know if I'm allowed to mention names because of the Resident Privacy Policy, but I helped my old lady with her cards while I was sitting next to the old fellow who remembers everything. He's excellent at Bingo; apparently he's the regular winner. But my old lady won two games and blackout, which made me feel sort of inordinately proud, because she was my old lady.

Then I did plant cart, the point of which is pretty much to load all the plants from the sunroom onto a cart and take them around so the residents can water them. This is a regular activity that seems to be enjoyed.

And then my five hours were up, and Mum got me.

Waen has been complaining about drabbles. She says it is like getting half a pair of earrings.

Well.

Personally, I think she's sulking because of this, but really, I don't agree. I love drabbles. I think it's so neat how a person can get so much feeling into one hundred words. This is not to say that a) all drabbles are fantastic, or b) full-length epics or one-shots are bad. I <3 full-length fics like anything. But I think drabbles are great, too.

[livejournal.com profile] petronelle, for example, writes the nicest drabbles ever. They're absolutely incredible for the number of words that go into them--there's so much description and so much expressed. She had a Remus/Hermione, I believe, a month or so back that was just the neatest. damn. thing.

[livejournal.com profile] sansenmage, also, writes drabbles. They explode my head, but I love them none-the-less.

But [livejournal.com profile] mhari writes ficlets. And her ficlets make me die of squee, too, just as much as Petra's or Seneca's drabbles. It's a different sort of squee, that's all.

And [livejournal.com profile] gileonnen writes Jack/Norrington fics that are long and fabulous. [livejournal.com profile] birdmad_girl wrote the best crossover I've ever read, and it was epic-length.

What I'm attempting to say is, I don't think length matters at all, really. I think it has far much more to do with talent.

So Waen ought to be satisfied with my incredibly talented hundred-word gifts, dammit!
