When I was in EDNOS Support at Pinnacle a few years ago, Christine, the group leader, said that we were never allowed to mention specifics. Thus, "I ate to-day!" was okay; "I ate some chicken and ice cream!" was not. "I lost too much weight" was okay; "I lost one-hundred sixty pounds" was not.
And I at first did not really get this; although it led to many disturbingly hilarious jokes, like the time Sandra asked us if she could say she went to the store to buy cat food without triggering anybody. But--now I do. Because the more I give it thought, the more it seems like it's definitely specifics that trigger me.
"I exercised to-day"? No problem. "I jogged three miles," and I'm in a corner. It's--definitely it's a pattern. I can't handle specifics because when I have specifics I can make measurements, and when I make measurements I can make comparisons, and they're always unfavourable. Because that's how I operate.
It's sort of interesting to realise.

It rained again to-day very fine; I was pleased about that. Went to the doctor and got lots of shots, also Amish market with great success generally. And the books I bought for Maria came to-day! And I bought a slinky dress. >_> Because it was two-dollars-fifty. And purple. And I fail.

Date: 2008-04-25 09:06 pm (UTC)It's interesting, what you say about specifics. Because, thinking about my own triggers (in a different area, but the same things are still applicable), I think that's true for me the majority of the time. Also, sometimes relatively innocuous-seeming details that don't seem to have anything to do with the subject in question, I find.

Date: 2008-04-25 09:26 pm (UTC)I think the brain must be able to seize on specifics better. It must be something about the preciseness of detail or something. And--those too.

Date: 2008-04-26 01:35 am (UTC)Yes, that makes sense. It can be problematic to try to explain to people, though - they'll always go, "But you weren't bothered by that!" or something.

Date: 2008-04-26 02:28 am (UTC)Yes! I don't know why, I think it's because you can't wholly understand how affecting it is unless you're affected, briefly.

3. We must visit soon. I must come up and thrift shop with you... I love old random stuff and, even more, I love finding old random stuff that I like, that suits me, that is cheap. If not before, I must come up once Camilla returns to Denmark and I have more free time... and, most certainly, before you go off to college.
4. I have your Christmas present still... I thought we weren't going to do this again this year? This waiting until summer to exchange Christmas presents, it is seriously unacceptable when we only live an hour apart!
5. I LOVE you!!!

Date: 2008-04-29 01:26 am (UTC)2. Well, there is that. I wouldn't want any dress of mine to have some kind of complex. Maybe I'll wear it to see you. :P
3. Yes! Omg. If you want to come up to this area, there are a lot of thrift stores and just random old stores that are very neat. Selinsgrove is a pretty cool place, specifically Historic Selinsgrove. When does Camilla go home?
4. Actually. XD I was going to drop yours off this weekend when I was in Camp Hill to see my therapist, but I got lost and couldn't find your house and wandered for hours before giving up and coming home. Isn't that pathetic?
5. I LOVE you. Massively.

Date: 2008-04-29 01:37 am (UTC)2. No, you can't go around giving your clothing complexes... I'd love to see you in it.
3. I love old stores, thrift stores, old buildings and the like... plus, it looks so beautiful where you live, so relaxing and pretty... plus, even though you can't stand them those horses of yours look like they want me to give them a cuddle!
Camilla leaves June 10th... but I might be able to find some free time before then. In fact, what are you doing this Saturday afternoon? I have an admissions testing to do in the morning, until around noon, but perhaps I could drive up after?
4. Not pathetic, totally something I would do. If you had found the house and I had been here that would have rocked.. if you had found it and I hadn't I would have been sad to have missed you.
5. I love you, more massively.

Date: 2008-04-29 01:57 am (UTC)3. Then you totally need to come here some time. It would be superb. Also OH. OH. Yes, actually, that might work really well, because all the others want to go to a friend's house to see the Derby coverage on t.v. So I can ask Mama if it would be okay to have you up! I will do that to-morrow. That would be awesome.
4. I did think it would kind of suck if you weren't there. XD So I guess it works out.
5. ♥
