psalm_onethirtyone: (Cascade Pond)
This has really been an almost perfect summer day. I don't have work, for what feels like the first time in ages, so I got up late this morning and got to wear whatever clothes I like -- which in this case is my new jean skirt and my blue shirt with the bicycle on it -- and eat breakfast slowly and do the crossword.

Then I drove down to Whispering Pines, and the first cling-stone peaches are in there, so I bought a basket of those as well as the things I actually went to get. I took the scenic route home by the sawmill and over Clark's Hill. I fed my fish; Tash is getting braver and braver. I haven't seen the new ones yet, but they always take a while to warm up. I fed and checked on my babies. I got the mail.

I finally finished all the artwork on my summer project, so I need to start doing the layout and text parts now, which I'll begin in a moment. The only nuisance is that my room is so hot, being upstairs, that I don't really feel like going up there. :P On that note, I do need to call the photographer.

I brought my favourite client blueberries yesterday, since they're in at the store, and since peaches are in now I think I'll bring her those next week. She was not doing super well yesterday -- she has trouble with anxiety and depression -- so I am kind of in a fuss-over-her mood right now. I made her shortcake yesterday to go with her blueberries, which I really hope she likes.

Pretty much the only downside to to-day is that I do get lonely when I'm home alone all day; and I'm still feeling a bit sick. --oh, except Mama just came home. So that's all right, I'll go bother her.

I'm pretty sure it's going to rain.
psalm_onethirtyone: (Annie with Red Hair)
So for those of you who are aware of my weekend of FUBAR (i.e. [livejournal.com profile] mhari, but shh), GUESS WHAT. My mother did not break her rib after all! Also, the ER doctor thought she was hilarious and prescribed her "full body armour". So that's cool.

I got up at six this morning to go see my client out in Hellafarawayville; the coworker who gave me report on him implied that he was a dirty old man who would try to get me into the shower with him by claiming he couldn't do his own personal care, but actually he was a complete sweetheart. We talked about his family, and his dead wife who he really misses, and farming, and I took care of his ancient blind Pomeranian, who was also a doll. He was pretty low-key -- once I made him his foods and gave him his medicine, he just wanted to talk. So we did! He said yesterday he went to his grandson's fourth of July party and shot clay pigeons for an hour. :D

Now I have an hour or so before I go to see my lady here in town, so I'm camping out at the library stealin' their WiFi before I head down there; it's way shorter than going home and then going out again, and if I don't go home between visits than I can claim reimbursement for mileage, so that is what I am doing. It's not so bad, except I am exhausted and really wish I could nap. Oh, well.

The rabbit chewed through the mouse cord on our computer at home, so we are in the process of seeing whether that can be fixed. If it can, I'll be online to-night. If it can't... hell if I know. My work schedule to-morrow and the day after that is insane anyway, though Wednesday I get to go back to my favourite client, who I only do a four-hour shift with. She is my favouritest favourite.

Positive: Thursday I got a koi and a shubunkin (Liung and Erik), and they are gorgeous. I am training them to come when called, like the others. It took a few weeks with Tash (catfish), but he caught on really well, so I am hoping they will too.
psalm_onethirtyone: (Cascade Pond)
I:

got to start watching the Illbleed Let's Play; finally got my paycheque; am not working until Wednesday; had ice cream and black raspberries; got my toenails painted rainbow by a lady at church; had a nap to-day; had a bicycle ride to-day; am planning to make cupcakes to-morrow with the fresh cherries we didn't can; got to ride in Maria's Miata; have the cutest fishies in the world; DON'T WORK UNTIL WEDNESDAY; found out strawberries can prevent/cure cancer; got a Tom Waits album from Maria's boyfriend; will sleep in to-morrow.

And it wasn't a million degrees outside, either.

Mmm, summer.
psalm_onethirtyone: (Nota Bene)
So to-day I:

--lined up a job interview for to-morrow
--cleaned the brooder shed
--papered the brooder shed and set it up for the broody turkey
--made my very first planter!
--fished a dead rat out of the pond
--fished Sam's cribbing collar out of the mire in the back of the barn
--established that there are no dead kittens in the barn, so if they did drown in the mire their mama removed the bodies
--fell out of the haymow, and now have skinned legs
--made my parents watch Eddie Izzard's "Dress to Kill"
--cleaned and decorated my room, unpacked and put away all my school things
--organised my closet
--staked one of the hops.

It's not bad, I don't think, considering I didn't wake up until 1.30 and it's my first day back. >_> Also, [livejournal.com profile] raanve, I would never have gotten through cleaning the brooder shed without your mix. ALSO, I think I found us a Lanselos/Saigremort song.

Going to [livejournal.com profile] mhari's house on the twelfth! So excited.

Also, FOR THE RECORD, my fish recognise the sound of my voice. I've been conducting experiments, and it's honestly true. They only surface for me, and they do it when I sing their food song, whether or not I throw down food (although that latter bit is pure Pavlovian stuff). COOL.
psalm_onethirtyone: (Only Time Gold Doesn't Sink)
DUDE. So I was checking out books for a lady at the library, and discovered that there is a series of Arthurian romance novels called Knights of the Round Table.

I put the Geraint/Enid one on hold for me. Because LOL. They can't be worse than Rosalind Miles.

p.s. Cheyenne gave me a CATFISH. He is awesome and needs a good whiskery name.
psalm_onethirtyone: (Narwhals Narwhals Swimmin' in the Ocean)
So! Two different ladies at the pet store told me that probably the reason Perci died was because of his sponge--that they no longer recommend using sponges in hermit crab tanks because sponges make it too moist and as a result bad bacteria grows. So after deep-cleaning the tank with chlorox, running all the stones and shells through the dishwasher, and baking the sand and wood in the oven for fifteen minutes at 400 degrees, I have put everything back together and installed Mark II, or Twoy, the new crab.

He is adorable--he's about a fifth Perci's size and has a spiky shell, and absolutely tears all over the place. He's a different type, too; whereas Perci was an Ecuadorian, he's a Purple Pincher. I'm hoping he proves a little hardier. I also think he's younger, because he's so much smaller.

Also bought food for the fishies, which means they've gotten extremely affectionate. Any time I sit by the pond they come over in droves to suck on my feet. I love my fish. ♥

Otherwise, I found the kittens (there are only six now), but the mother moved them again this morning so I have to go on the prowl again. I am going to borrow a Have-a-Heart trap from my crazy cat lady aunt to try and catch the mama. Larry moved into the main turkey shed this morning, and he loathes it.

Also, [livejournal.com profile] tulipmonster, I made you a giant paper collage squid but he may be too big to fit into a mailing envelope. Or at least too big to go without costing the rest of my college education. It depends! I am going to ask at the post office to-morrow.
psalm_onethirtyone: (Therefore Be Free)
The good: we got the bees in just right. We picked them up in their nuke box from Andy, drove them home, waited until dusk, and then put them into their new hive. They seem to have settled right in, and we're going to check them to-morrow to see how they're doing, as far as the queen and such.

My fish remember me; I went and sat by the pond yesterday and the day before and they sucked on my toes, which is the weirdest and nicest feeling. One of them has a super long tail. He's really beautiful.

I am in charge of monitoring the broody hens, since Maria will be away about the time their clutches are due! I'm so excited. I have to go in and check them every day and see if they have chicks or poults, and take them away right away if they do. Then I whisk them upstairs to the brooder shed that we have slapdash put together in the laundry room.

Maria and I finally saw Iron Man 2, which was awesome, and then spent the afternoon at Michael's spending the gift card I got for my birthday--we bought all this cake decorating stuff we've been coveting for ages, a beautiful set of dyes and cake glitter in two colours and shimmer in one. We're making cookies to-morrow so we can use it all. We're super excited. To-day we cleaned the house while Mama was at work so she wouldn't be in such a bad mood when she got home (she and Dad are arguing about horse fencing again).

the bad: Perci died while I was away at [livejournal.com profile] mhari's. Mama thinks she didn't keep him moist enough, which I don't know if that's true or not but I don't want to say that it is because I know she'll just feel worse. I haven't buried him just yet, but I will to-morrow. Dad says he lived a really long time for a hermit crab, but since all the websites say you can keep them alive for ages I feel like I just screwed up somehow.

One of the barn kittens died, but I didn't notice in time, so the barn cat moved all the rest of them somewhere else and I didn't see where. I am going to look for them to-morrow--I think they're still in the barn because she's still lurking around in that area and there's plenty of warm, dry hay that's gone loose. I have to bring a flashlight, though, since I tried a cursory look around yesterday and couldn't actually seen in most places.

So--that's all the news.
psalm_onethirtyone: (Cephalopods Need Heart)
On a better note, check out this awesome article that [livejournal.com profile] nowgoesquickly sent to me!
psalm_onethirtyone: (Fun with Cameras)
PICSPAM.

Of a lot of things, actually, including our cats, our farm, my jellyfish collection, and Hallowe'en. To name but a few!

To boldly go-- )
psalm_onethirtyone: (Times of Woe)
My dear, sweet fishies died. I went to feed them this evening and they were both dead.

Cyrano was at least two years old. He was a foot long and had the most beautiful whiskers in the whole world. Levin was only a year old, but he was eight inches and one of those beautiful gold and white and black speckled koi that are so pretty. They both came when I called them, and Cyrano sometimes would eat from my hand.

Mama is worried that it might be something on the bottom of the pond, since Cyrano definitely was a bottomfeeder and she thinks Levin might have been too; but Maria thinks it's the blue heron from the Mahantango (only if it were the heron, wouldn't it have eaten them instead of leaving them?).

I already miss them so much. RIP, beauties.
psalm_onethirtyone: (Lock the Doors and Call me Yours)
I swear I have cleaned the kitchen at least six times since Maria's friends came to visit. What is it about teenage girls that makes them so awfully messy?

Worked at the church yard sale to-day, very tedious, but I got some nice tins and an Emu Crossing sign for Maria, so that worked out. I need to bake cake for Maria's graduation party--I got her present and card and everything's wrapped, it's not until next weekend, so that's all right. Mostly my life is fairly mundane, although I saved the lives of three poults last week--the other three were crushed to death by their mama. The survivors are named Porthos, Athos, and Aramis, but we won't be able to tell them apart soon.

Quaker got a puncture wound in his shoulder that is over eight inches deep, and we have no idea how, so that's pretty exciting, and by exciting I mean terrible.

Maria was given a bible for her graduation by our priest, which is frustrating because we have explained to the priest on numerous occasions that she is spiritual rather than religious. On the other hand, it's one of those awful "modern translations", and Leviticus and Exodus turn out to be even funnier rendered into faux-modernity. That goes double for the psalms and proverbs.

And I'm fat and I sleep a lot, but I also clean a lot and take care of my fish and the kitten (whose name has gone back to Kirk, Maria MAKE UP YOUR MIND) and make cards and things like that, and I'll get a job when I go back to school if I can, and we're going to Tennessee and I'll visit [livejournal.com profile] mhari, so I guess things are worth it in their own way. Still haven't got an appt. with the psych, still very tired. But life goes on because it has to.
psalm_onethirtyone: (Gold-Sun Glory in the Wind)
Hiro is going to be the DEATH OF ME AGH. He keeps trying to climb up my bare legs so he can get cuddles; I've been wearing trousers to-day in self-defence. I can't wait until Ando comes home and he has somebody to play with. He's doing really well! He just really hasn't figured out the whole 'retractable claws' thing and he loves to get into my lap.

Maria and I are taking the Quaker out for a drive to-day, which should be fun--he keeps trying to kill us when we drive with him (two weeks ago he shied at a stop sign and cantered halfway down the wrong side of the road before Maria could get him under control, and I clutched her thigh until my hand hurt but didn't scream, and she told me she was really proud of me for it) (last week he shied at a puddle, he is useless you giez). So that should be nice.

I need to finish my preparations for Maria's graduation party. Yesterday I cleaned the house, which always makes Maggie hate me--she always runs from the place I'm vacuuming to the place I'm about to vacuum, so I chase her around the house essentially and she is not thrilled by that. I bought Maria's cup and I need to go to the store and print out a photo of her so I can draw a helix across her face and leave it on her pillow. Uh. Not that we have a strange sense of humour or anything. Or that we spend hours sometimes reimagining Gunsmoke as Star Trek ("He's dead, Matt. Dammit, I'm a doctor, not a marshal." "Beam us up, Kitty." &c).

We've been doing a lot of planting lately, and I still haven't repotted Mohindar, which I really need to do because he hates his little plastic pot. He gets all cringy and sad in it. On the plus side, the fishies are doing well, and Levin is huge--nearly eight inches long. I'm so proud of him.

We're trying to name the hen with the bad foot--can anybody think of any good (funny or fandomy) names for a lady with crinkled toes? Black Peter has become unrecognisable, but Nellie is getting more playful, and I can't wait for them to go down with the rest of the flock in the long bottom. We have Redjac and Dora and Fidel and Jol down there, as well as two buff hens, another Aracauna, and another Marron.

The weather is finally nice enough to start hanging laundry on the line again! I think we're all glad of this.
psalm_onethirtyone: (Kerchief)
Well, my workplace called. They'd never sent the check, which was why it hasn't arrived. I said, oh, that okay, even though it's not really, and my manager said, I'll give it to you when you come in Friday.

...I don't work Fridays, I said.

I need you Friday, she said.

I have another job on Friday, I said.

It ends at four-thirty, doesn't it? she said. You can come in at five-thirty.

NO, I did not say. I AM TIRED AFTER THAT. I WANT TO HANG OUT WITH MY FAMILY.

Okay, I said.

God, I'm useless. And I let her make me work a ten-hour shift on Sunday. Instead of taking Maria to the pool party, like she wanted. And you know what, I was so close to just saying, NO, I QUIT, I do not WANT to work whatever hours you choose to give me because you tell me that you NEED me and cannot COPE without me. Which is so many kinds of not true it's not even funny.

But here is the thing. Daddy would be disappointed. Mama said as much. He had to work much worse shifts much longer when he was a boy, and working in the canning factory. He thinks that my job is easy, and he thinks I am utterly pathetic for getting so upset over this, and I know he will be disappointed if I cop out.

So I am not going to. It's two weeks. I am a good strong girl. I will make it through and I will be bright and useful and competent and capable and if I need a reference, by God they will give me a good reference, because I will be a good worker. I love people. I like feeding people. I will do my job for my customers, and not for my management. And when it's done I will have more money than I did before, so I'll be able to buy schoolbooks, and Daddy will maybe not be proud of me, but he will not think I am a useless wimp.

And that's what.

To-day I helped Mama wire up the garden with chicken wire to keep the turkeys out! The turkeys are ravenous, and they have been eating her bee balm. Also I went out and admired Maria's garden--she planted basil to-day, nestled between the artichokes and the moonsandstars watermelons, which are HUGE. LORD. I fed my fishes and worked on their surprise for when I go away (recorded eight more stories!) and cut out a lot of stuff to sticker. ^__^

Yesterday! Oh, yesterday, I went on a bike ride that turned out to be much too long. I was out for two hours. I went to the Amish Market, which only takes me half an hour, and then when I got there, I though, well, heck, I could bike to work from here! So I did. And that took another half an hour, and was less pleasant because it was along the highway, as opposed to back country roads. And then I just went on down the highway to Route 104, and turned there to go along Klinger Hollow back to Oriental, sort an enormous uphill hypotenuse. I thought I was going to die. XD About halfway through Klinger Hollow I just got off my bike and went up to the first house I saw that had cows (you can always trust people who have about five cows) and rang the doorbell, and said, "Can I please borrow a glass of water?"

And they gave it to me! They were really nice. They gave me the water, and said they liked to bike on hot days, too, and saw me off. I should make them a pie or something, or maybe give them one of the watermelons. I need to think about what would be right.

So anyway from there I got home all right, and realised that I was sunburned all over, and Lord it hurts. My back looks like boiled lobster. Owwwwww. And I also had a minor case of sunstroke and had to lie down the rest of the day. I am not the brightest egg in the box.

But Maria's turkey toms all display now. :D They look so pretty it's great. And her guinea chickens come to-morrow! I am excited. She says guinea keets are smaller than chicks.

Ooh, and yesterday we also washed the dogs in the yard. They both look so tiny once their fur is all flat and wet.

And Levin, my koi, is enormous. He's doubled, as far as I can tell. Also he has either fathered or borne a gigantic number of baby kois. There are at least thirty, all swimming around in there fighting the big goldfish for food. Mama says we should catch them and sell them to the pet store. Maybe we will.

I think this balances out work, somehow.
psalm_onethirtyone: (Gold-Sun Glory in the Wind)
Something I really like is driving when it's hot. The road has mirages in it, big silvery pools of water that just flicker disappear when you get close enough to drive through them, and in this part of the county there's always wind rushing by you. I drive through the archways of trees to Newport, and the sunlight comes through spotty and dapply and beautiful. The Car has no air conditioning; in fact, it's stuck on heating and won't turn off, so you have to drive with the windows down or die. It thumps along and hums, and in the back five-hundred things rattle around and fall over when you turn the sharp curves.

My hair always blows around my face and I feel really and truly beautiful.

Deer jumped across the road in front of us on Sunday, and to-day I saw turkeys and guineas and a scattering of chickens like fluffy white constellations across the brown mud of the horse pasture down aways in the hollow. Red-winged blackbirds are in positively millions if you take the back way home.

Maria has started hanging up our laundry outside rather than run the dryer, so we look like the Mennonites with our ropes and ropes of blowing, flying colours. They planted potatoes to-day. I bicycled my loop and went through the park full of fisherman sitting in chairs with bright yellow fishing licenses dangling from their hats.

Every day I feed the fish. The goldfish are fat and smart and gobble up their food right away, but Cyrano can't see very well. He feelers his whiskers up, snuffling around for the foods, and when he brushes against one his big mouth opens wide wide WIDE and in goes the foods, in a single smooth gulp. It's so wonderful watching him eat. He is my favourite. I swear I sometimes feel more genuine love and affection for that fish than my cat (who is turning very malicious in her old age).

p.s. NOBODY TOLD ME THERE WERE MURDER MYSTERIES ABOUT SHEEP. OH, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE, WONDROUS BOOK OF WONDER?
psalm_onethirtyone: (Sparkle)
It is--a long-awaited picspam. Massively old, as evidenced by photographs of Soujin's birthday; but also fresh and new, as shown by octopus cake photographs. Warning: Most of these are horrendously blurry, as they were taken with Mum's old camera (mine is broken).

We bid your worships enjoy )
psalm_onethirtyone: (Smile)
Notes:

I found a bird in the greenhouse to-day. I netted it with the fishnet and picked it up in my hands and held it out to the outside, and it flew away. I could feel its heartbeat the whole time. I managed to do all this while eating breakfast. Then I read out by the fishpond.

I've heard about voles a great deal, but never firsthand experienced their effect on tulips. Dear sweet Lord, it was like something out of a horror film. Yesterday the bed was full of deep red double tulips, and to-day when I looked two of them had turned black and were drooping, and when I tugged very lightly on them they came right up out of the ground--their bulbs had been eaten off under the earth, they ended in a ragged stem. I've never seen anything like it before.

Our bewhiskered gentleman in the fishpond came and had dinner to-day while I watched. He's really beautiful. We're taking him to the Oriental house once we dig a fishpond there, or at least I assume we'll dig a fishpond there.

I drove up with Daddy. Robin went back to her family to-day, so now it's just a very grumpy ewe. She tried to kill me. ^__^ I climbed around in the barn and took photographs of things for Luisa, of the insides of the outbuildings and of the barn and the cedars by the stream.

I telephoned Zara this evening. ♥ I've missed her so much, I'm so glad to have talked to her again. I apologise to her, incidentally, for being antsy and silent and awful. I'm apparently worse on telephones than I remember. >_> But we laughed a lot and were ridiculous and I can't wait to see her again. ♥ ♥ ♥

We planted potatoes and flowers to-day. Potatoes in the sun with their eyes to heaven, and petunias in the garden and there were so many earthworms I couldn't count them all I tried, I tried. Mum and I dug things to take to the Oriental house.

I think it was a good day.

(we had ice cream and watched Rosemary&Thyme in the evening.)
